At the beginning of November, we explored the Aidu oil shale quarry.
The Aidu quarry is located in Ida-Viru County and is renowned for its unique landscape and historical background. The quarry was once part of the Aidu oil shale mine, which ceased active mining operations in 2012. The resulting artificial lakes, channels, and sand ridges give the area a distinctive appearance, resembling underwater landscapes. Today, Aidu is a popular destination for hiking and water sports, offering visitors the chance to experience a unique natural environment that combines industrial history with natural beauty.
We hiked in the Aidu quarry for two days and spent the night in a Swedish military tent, where a stove kept us warm. Of course, we tended the stove ourselves, and it was plenty warm while the fire was burning! :)
Around 2 a.m., the stove went out, and everyone could feel the cold creeping into their bones. But our guide quickly rekindled the fire, and soon everyone drifted back into a cozy sleep.
The adventure was great, filled with plenty of emotions and memories.
Join us on our next hike and discover new, exciting ways to experience the outdoors!
